finnie's first sentence...heard while pretending to run a tacos shop out of a large plastic storage container:
"Three tacos please, dada, thanks."
Such a polite boy!

baby pavarotti
my dad was over on sunday evening to eat a gigantic ribeye and a monstrous baked potato for fathers day. after dinner, he went and got josh's guitar from the bedroom and started playing a few songs that he likes to sing. finnegan came and sat on a pillow on top of the couch and looked at him curiously. then, during a chorus, finnie started singing "la la la" EVERYTIME my dad would pause for the next line.
and it seemed to be on time and rhythm with the song until it was about to end when finnie threw his chin up and his head back and closed his eyes and belted out "LAAAAAA" and then looked at me like he wasn't sure if he was finnie anymore. was he the most famous cantante del mundo?
i could shoot myself for not having a video of it. but honestly i was laughing too hard to do anything but, well, laugh. and hope he never stopped.

toiletries
i organized the bathroom cabinets today. you know folded the sheets and towels super neat, wiped down the ugly geese and ribbons wallpaper on the shelves, and went to garden ridge and bought baskets for everything. it all looks really good. well, as good as a rent house with ugly fixtures and cheap cabinets can look.
and just now i was in the doorway looking at the shower, thinking how i could organize that area and noticed a bottle of feigned funky, de-gunkify cleaning shampoo that has been traveling with josh and i throughout our relationship. i think this one bottle of shampoo was josh's when he and rhiannon lived together. and then when we moved in together it was there. and now that we've lived here almost two years, i'm thinking someone likes that gunk buildup on his hair. or he's just been using my shampoo. hmmm....

some growth observations
finnie is growing cognitively in leaps and bounds. so i want to jot down a few of the things josh and i found amazing over the weekend. he literally will go to sleep one night being confused by a phrase or not knowing how to express a need and wake up the next morning expressing away with ease. for anyone who doesn't have kids this may be hard to imagine and for anyone who does it might be boring but i can't help think that my kid is the most amazing little pickle on the face of this earth. so once again: kids do funny things to an otherwise emotionally in-control person. you get the urge to gush. a lot. about poop and talking. anyway:
-he knows where we are when we are driving. if we go down brodie lane he starts saying "dada work?" or on the end of my dad's street he knows that we're going to "papa, house? drums?". even in lubbock this weekend he knew after the first few times that we were pulling up to chris's house without telling him where we were.
-we got him a shape sorter and it's taken him about six days to become totally proficient at it. he also names the shapes with out prompting while he's sorting. for all the octogon, pentagon, hexagon like shapes it's "hex-gon?"
-he recognizes most of his letters (i think it's only j and v that he doesn't really know and he gets c and g confused and m and n) but he'll just walk around playing with a puzzle or something and say "a, apple?" "c, cookie?" over and over again.
-he chatter boxes like quaker parrot. repeating everything from "breakable" to "endorsed it" to "condo" and says what he wants too. like "finnie, fwimmun? pool?" and everything is a question and not a question at the same time.
so that's just somethings...it's been a long weekend full of six hour trips, funerals, real estate hunting, beer can chicken, coopers barbeque twice, food poisioning from bad italian food and in laws. and a good time was had by all. pretty rare right? like i said. i'm a lucky girl.

eek!
just thought i'd break the silence :)
i'm done with my teaching job that has taken every waking moment that i'm not with finnie so i finally am making time to write in my journal, take pictures, go swimming and cook dinner.
love it.
some stories are soon to come.

new words
we have some new words to add to finnie's list. his doctor told me i wouldn't be able to count them by the time he turned 18 months which is fine with me because i have no interest in math. language is so awesome! why kill it with numbers?
ok...firetruck (every truck is a firetruck and i think we reinforced this by taking him to the fire department and letting him sit in the big one and push all the buttons), car, fish, squirrel (sounds like "kwuul"), please, cookie (sign language and regular ol baby talk),cracker, jacket, keys, poo-poo, tee-tee (we're learning where to put these), head, hair, nose, eyes, banana, star, coffee (sounds like ka-ka), pumpkin, apple and night night.
those are the ones i recall right now. and the ones i can decipher. they say that babies might label everything with one word they like such as 'ball' for all toys or "baba" when they want food or drink. the only thing i've heard like that in finnie is that he's constantly saying "da-da". and sometimes i know he means his dad. but other times he's grabbing a blanket or his jacket and you can hear a subtle difference in his speech. to me that's the fun part of this time in parenting. i have a walking talking treasure map that is leading me to problem solving gold.

Happy New Year!
i haven't written down any resolutions yet but if i did have a resolution, let's say that it would be to be a better conversationalist. i really like talking to people but sometimes i find that i either dominate the conversation or take it in a different direction. i interrupt or interject a little too often and talk about myself more than i'd like. and more than other people like i'm sure.
i mean no one really wants to know the exact layout of my first office job or the recurring dream i have about the boat capsizing. they don't care ab0ut finnie's bowel movements or his sleep schedule unless they directly ask and if someone is talking about a point of interest i would like to train myself to just shut up and visualize instead of thinking about what to say next. talking with people involves listening, empathy, sympathy, language development, learning, wit and just a little dab of sugar.
so i'd like to be better at that. how about you?
